Testosterone & Sleep

As far as sleep and your testosterone levels -- most people don’t realize that the majority of your testosterone and other “repair” hormones is produced during sleep.

Additionally, less sleep increases your stress hormone, cortisol … which opposes testosterone and thus, as cortisol rises, your testosterone drops.

And the secret is getting into deep REM sleep (rapid eye movement).

However, going to bed at the wrong times, eating the wrong foods or drinks, not having specific vitamins, minerals, herbs and amino acids will screw up your REM sleep and testosterone production.

And in regards to how much sleep you need for optimal testosterone levels… studies have shown that men who sleep 4-5 hours on average, have 60% to 120% LESS testosterone than men who average 8-9 hours.1,2


5 Clinically Proven Ways To Get Better & Deeper Sleep

Go to bed before midnight. You should actually go to bed around 9:30-10 pm because that’s your body’s natural circadian rhythm, which produces lower cortisol and higher testosterone. If that’s too early, at least get to bed before midnight.
Wear blue-blocker glasses. Bright light and blue light from electronic devices prevents your body from producing melatonin. So dim the lights around your home and wear these orange, blue-blocker glasses an hour or two before bed.

Eat a small, higher fat meal. One reason your body wakes up in the middle of the night is due to low blood sugar. About an hour or two before bed, have about 200 calories of some kind of protein, a healthy fat and a little bit of fruit to prevent blood sugar issues.
No electronic devices in your bedroom. No wi-fi, cell phones, etc. because the electromagnetic field disrupts sleep quality and brain function.3 If you need an alarm, use a regular alarm clock if possible or use your cell phone, but put it on “airplane” mode.
Sleep in a cold room with no underwear. As your body cools down, you produce more melatonin, the sleep hormone. And your testicles need to be a little cooler than your body temperature to produce optimal testosterone - that’s why no underwear.
Sleep in complete darkness. This means no light, no clock, no night-light or anything. Have black-out curtains and wear eye shades if you can’t make this happen.
Avoid alcohol, caffeine or any stimulants if you can. And don’t exercise to late in the day because that’s also “stimulates” your nervous system.

Focus more on vegetables, some yams, little bit of rice, legumes, quinoa and whole grains.

🔋 The Worst Energy Supplement For Your Health

Personally, I think one of the biggest problems in life that causes you to NOT be happy or achieve your goals is LACK OF ENERGY and basically, being tired all the time.

If you had more energy,

you’d get more work done…
you’d exercise more…
you’d get MORE out of your relationships… you’d socialize more, play with your kids, have more fun on the weekends, etc.
you’d be more productive in life and thus...

You’d be happier at the end of the each day because you had a FULL day!

In fact, one of the biggest complaints people have when it comes to their health is, “lack of energy”.

And this is why the most used and ABUSED drug on the planet is caffeine!

This is why beverages such as coffee, tea and “energy” drinks are the biggest money-makers -- everyone is drinking them to start AND get through their days.

In fact, people don’t even see caffeine as a drug. They think it’s just a “supplement”.

So “energy drinks” and “energy supplements” are just another delivery mechanism for caffeine.

In the old days, people would just take straight caffeine pills such as No-Doz or Vivarin.

It’s cheap and effective and yes, this is what I would do when I was younger to get through my long days at work and medical school.

I mean, it was like 6-7 days a week of 12-14 hour days. It was horrible.
But I didn’t know how else to get through the day.

When you’re young, your body can take the abuse.

Unfortunately, over time I noticed
I got fatter,
my sleep was horrible,
I was irritable all the time,
my sex drive was lower,
I was losing muscle

and worse of all, I was still TIRED all the time after the INITIAL energy “high” from the caffeine.

In fact, after a while I needed the caffeine just say “normal”. I wasn’t even getting energized anymore.

And THIS is the problem with caffeine! -- Your body quickly adapts after a few days or weeks.

Your adrenal glands get burned out and you have “adrenal fatigue”.

Your stress hormones such as Cortisol goes sky-high, which causes negative imbalances with all of your “youth” hormones.

Thus,
your testosterone drops…
your thyroid and metabolism slows down…
your insulin levels go up…
you have high blood pressure…
your dopamine levels (your happy neurotransmitter) and receptors don’t work very well

and the end result is accelerated aging!

Both physically AND mentally.

And, this is what happened to me!

So, I had to find a safe and long-term solution.

The first thing I did was slowly get off anything with caffeine.

I did NOT do this “cold-turkey” or abruptly because caffeine is a drug. Your body is addicted to it, no differently than cocaine.

In fact, cocaine was the original ingredient in Coca-Cola

When cogaine became illegal, they needed to find a “legal” alternative and that’s when Coca-Cola switched over to caffeine!

Anyway, as I was getting off the caffeine, I started using natural herbs to help FIX my bodies caffeine-induced problems.

♂️ Clinical Facts About Ketogenic Diets, Testosterone Levels & Sex Drive

Ketogenic diets are “back again” in the “diet” world. Every week I get asked about how ketogenic diets affect
testosterone levels
Cholesterol
weight loss
thyroid levels
blood sugar
so on and so forth.

However, today I want to discuss the real truth and clinical facts about how ketogenic diets affect your testosterone levels and thus, your muscle mass, fat loss, mood and sex drive.

And why should you listen to me?... well, other than the fact I’m an anti-aging, endocrinology (hormone) doctor… I actually did my first ketogenic diet almost 25 years ago!

I also helped write a book about this topic a couple decades ago.

And I had spoken to one of pioneer doctors about this topic, Dr. Atkins … and how it affected his patients - both in the short and long run.

So… you can say I’m a bit of an “expert” and have “been there, done that”.

And bring up this topic today because Timothy asked in one of my video comments:

“I’ve been following a ketogenic diet for the past 5-6 weeks and I wanted to know if it makes my testosterone levels better or worse? I ask because I am losing weight and I felt good the first couple of weeks. But I’ll be honest with you, I kinda feel like crap now. I think the weight I’m losing is a lot more muscle and my sex drive is down the toilet!”

I’m glad Timothy brought this up because what he is going through is typical and it’s even worse for women and I’ll explain why and how you can fix this in today’s video...

So in regards to testosterone levels - yes, ketogenic diets can dramatically drop your levels and screw up a lot of your hormones, especially your stress hormone, cortisol.1,3

So as cortisol goes up, your testosterone goes down.

And for women, it also causes hormonal imbalances and can really mess up their menstrual cycles long term.

I’ve seen these negative hormonal changes over and over again during the years, including on myself.

I personally feel horrible on Ketogenic diets. Granted, some people like them.

But hormonally speaking, the majority of blood tests I’ve seen over the years, almost always caused negative changes in your youth hormones - especially your testosterone and cortisol ratios.

In fact, a study showed that just reducing your carbohydrates down to 30% of your calories, testosterone levels dropped by 36%!5

And this was just 30% of calories - A ketogenic diet is only 5% carbohydrates, so can just imagine how much LOWER your testosterone will be.

In fact, the results are even worse with Olympic athletes and weight lifters.4

So What’s The Solution

IF you really want to follow a ketogenic diet, do one that’s cyclical. Maybe 5 days on, 2 days off… where you “carb up” during the 2 days “off”.

And limited the ketogenic diet for only a few weeks or a couple of months at the most, until your reach your goal.

If you want to follow it long-term, just monitor your hormones, how you look and feel.

Remember, carbohydrates aren’t evil. There are “good” and “bad” carbs.
